Course Description

This 10 or 12 credit Coordinated Studies class is especially designed for new or returning students.  In this evening course, we will approach the theme of "Beginnings" by asking what and how you need to develop at the beginning of your college experience, particularly focusing on the academic skills of reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking that will help you be successful in college. We will focus on reading and discussing fiction and non-fiction to investigate how we sustain our own culture and communicate with other cultures around us.  We will investigate how to communicate one's identity by investigating the values and strengths of one's family, native language, or culture of origin. We will use seminars to explore the books and use writing to focus on the themes that emerge from the texts.  We will ask questions such as:  What are the rewards of telling our stories and hearing others as we cross cultures together?  How do family stories and our own stories shape our reactions to other cultures and peoples?

Linked Classes

American People and their Economies

Course Description

Today our country and our people are facing many serious economic challenges, both at home and abroad.  In this History/Economics link we will look at how, in its early years, the United States established a system that secured its financial independence from colonial powers and established its position as a leading trader in international markets.  What we learn in this link can teach us much about what we as individuals and as a country can and should be doing to apply economic reasoning to public issues and business and to move us beyond the economic crisis that now challenges our country and our global partners.

Fulfills the following AA degree requirements:  Quantitative Reasoning; Individuals, Cultures and Society; US Cultures; and Integrated Studies

Prerequisites: ECON&202 requires satisfactory completion of MATH 098 or equivalent.
